The making of sukip

sukip, as you know it today, didn’t even exist until July 24, 2006. Yes, that was the day we registered the www.sukip.com domain. It all happened in a flash; if I remember correctly the name was decided and registered in just a couple of days.

We are a team of 3 guys, 3 techies, 3 friends, 3 rivals, and now 3 partners in business. I’m working with one of the leading Indian website and it’s been more than a year now, the other one is working with Wipro Technologies for more then 2.5 years and the last one is with one of the leading customized electronics service provider.

This idea of creating a dot com came to us because none of us likes our jobs and since the beginning we’ve had a nag for entrepreneurship, and as I said before all this happened in a flash because the guy who works in Wipro was in Delhi that time (he lives in Bangalore) and 3 of us met the next day. At that time, we knew we were going to do something together but had no idea what the result would be.

We started by looking for a domain name, the criteria was simple - it should have 5 letters and the spelling should be obvious by its phonetics. We virtually discussed every 5 letter word we could guess but we soon realized how uphill the task was. We found a lot of help from www.ajaxwhois.com. You will know if you visit this site. Finally somehow, one of us proposed sukip, and alas, it was available. How we came up with sukip and what it means remains a deeply guarded secret!!! The day was July 24, and www.sukip.com was booked and a coming soon page put up on a shared server.

The next task was to decide on the nitty-gritty, the details of what we were going to do. As he had to leave for Bangalore in the next few days, we prepared a blueprint for sukip. As we started work, we spent (and continue to spend) many nights over voice chat. There was a lot of learning through this experience, and we committed some mistakes too. All the learnings will be shared with you as we have decided to share everything we do on this blog.

After some 5 months of coding and recoding, we released the first version of sukip on 1st Jan, 2007 as we have decided 5 months earlier. We were glad we didn’t exceed our first deadline. But there were many changes as we started to grow and many updates were released from January to April. Related Pictures, Search, Blogs, News, Blogs (example: see the Jhoom Barabar Jhoom page) were added through the use of different APIs. “I’m feeling lucky” is one section which has received tremendous response from the users. Sometimes even we are surprised to see the astonishing results returned by this section and we feel lucky.

We started our marketing campaigns in May, starting with visiting cards and then the Media Hunt Experiment. We have crossed some 1000 users till date and we receive 5,000 hits daily. We have some good growth plans for the future for which you need to wait and watch. We will keep you posted.
